We are here for you!
True orthodontic emergencies are rare. However, we want you to be aware of common orthodontic problems that can occur throughout treatment. We are here for you. If you think you might be experiencing an orthodontic emergency, feel free to give our office a call at (704) 364-6544.
COMMON ORTHODONTIC PROBLEMS
Throughout your orthodontic treatment, it is not uncommon to have a loose bracket, poking wires or bands pop off. These can be irritating, but the good news is they are all fixable. If you have a loose appliance, we suggest placing a piece of wax over the area and contacting our office so that we can schedule an appointment to reattach the part. Occasionally, a bracket can fall out and that is normal, too. We ask that you save any parts that fall out so that we can fix them as well. For poking wires, you can gently bend the wire inwards with a pencil eraser or place wax over the area to alleviate any discomfort. Generalized soreness is normal for a few days after each orthodontic visit. As your teeth get use to the tension, the soreness will decrease.
When should you seek help?
If you have sustained an injury to your face or mouth that involves your teeth, it is important to seek medical attention right away. Prompt medical treatment can help save your teeth. If you have a loose or chipped tooth, or a tooth has been knocked out, see your regular dentist as soon as possible. Your regular dentist is specially trained in handling these types of problems.
Swollen gums, unexplained bleeding or pain that does not respond to over the counter medication may be signs of an infection or abscess. It is important to see your regular dentist for prompt diagnosis and treatment.
